It is Part Wood, Part Recycled Plastic, and All Fun
No, it is not a marital aid. It’s a Sprig. What’s a sprig? It is the coolest, greenest, cleanest children’s toy you’ve ever taken from your kid to play with on your own. It also happens to be my latest investment.
I saw Sprig Toys present last year at the Angel Capital Summit, and I liked the idea right away. I think the eco-friendly, green toy space has some legs, and I believe Sprig’s philosophy and overall design approach will be well received. Let’s face it, if you can please the folks from a site called TreeHugger, you must be doing something positive for the environment, right?
The idea here is to combine green elements that make parents feel good about their purchase with technology and design that are engaging and interactive for the child. The products are made with a bio-composite called Sprigwood, which is a mixture of recycled wood and reclaimed plastic. If you see one of these rigs at the store, pick it up and smell it. It has this fresh, woody, outdoorsy aroma that is rather pleasant. But remember, you smell it, you buy it.
The Sprig products are electronic but do not require batteries. These things are kid powered so as the child pushes and plays with them the lights and audio are activated. This is very consistent with the company’s mission to get kids off the couch and playing with toys that provoke imagination and activity. As parents aren’t we all a little tired of our kids sitting around with passive “watch-me” toys where the toy does all the work? Although anything for some peace and quiet is always appreciated.
So it was fairly easy to share Sprig’s vision for the future of children’s toys. I like the team. I like the materials. I like the designs. I like the market. I like the products. I think you will like them too when they hit retailers this fall so keep your eyes open.
